Vascular and sensory assessments

Assessment of circulation and sensation

This service provides patients with an assessment of circulation and sensation in their feet, which is particularly important for patients with chronic conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus. A vascular examination includes assessment of the large and small blood vessels, toe pressure readings, and Doppler studies as required. Sensory tests measure nerve function and include 10 g monofilament and vibration testing.

Overview

Vascular and sensory assessments evaluate the blood flow and nerve function in the feet and lower limbs. These assessments are an important part of podiatry care, particularly for people with risk factors such as diabetes, circulatory conditions or reduced sensation in the feet.

Vascular assessment

During the vascular assessment, the podiatrist may check foot pulses, skin temperature and capillary refill to assess circulation. We also use diagnostic tools such as Doppler ultrasound, toe pressure measurements, and the MESI device to provide a more detailed evaluation of blood flow to the feet and toes.

Neurological testing

Neurological testing is performed to assess protective sensation and nerve function. This typically includes standard clinical assessments such as 10 g monofilament testing, vibration testing, and dermatome assessment. Where appropriate, a neurothesiometer may also be used to measure vibration perception thresholds and provide a more detailed assessment of nerve sensitivity.

Why these tests are important

These tests help identify early signs of reduced circulation or nerve changes, allowing potential problems to be detected and managed as early as possible. The results assist the podiatrist in developing an appropriate management plan to help maintain foot health and reduce the risk of complications.
